Math 281A - Integrated Mathematics I
Spring /Fall 2004

Course Purpose : The goal of this course is to extend the content knowledge of practicing primary grades elementary school teachers in the following areas:

  • Numeration systems, with a focus on place value
  • Students' methods of computing, leading to standard algorithms
  • Mental computation and estimation
  • Meanings and models for fractions
  • Relating fractions, decimals, and percents
  • Operations with fractions and their meanings
  • Integers and properties of the real number system
  • Number theory

Course Requirements:

Attendance/Participation/In-class Assignments .............. 20 points

Many of these assignments and activities will be done collaboratively, and may or may not be collected. The purpose of these assignments/activities is to develop concepts critical to reasoning about number and operations.

Homework . (8@ 5 pts each) ........................... 40 points

Though assignments will be individually collected, collaboration is encouraged. The

purpose of these assignments is to solidify understanding of important ideas and to

provide a mechanism for individual feedback.

Quizzes (2 @ 20 pts each) ........................ 40 points

Quiz topics are key ideas from the class that have been central to class activities and assignments; opportunities for previous feedback on these ideas will have been built into the class structure.*A score of 70% or above is required on each quiz to earn credit for the course.

Late assignments will be accepted no more than 2 weeks after the due date with a penalty of 10% for each week it is late.

Grades will be assigned base on cumulative point totals:

A for 93% and above

A-  for 90-92%

B+ for 87-89%

B for 83-86%

B- for 80-82%

C+ for 77-79%

C for 73-76%

C- for 70-72%

D for 60 - 69%

F for less than 60%

Please note: A grade of "C" or better is required to fulfill Math Specialist Certificate requirements. A "C-" or lower does not fulfill the requirements.

 

Attendance: If you will not be able to attend a class, please notify Karen Payne in a timely matter to discuss the possibility of make up work for missed coursework. For every missed class after the first, the final grade may be reduced by 5%. Missing a class may result in a reduced stipend.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Once the registration form has been processed, any change to the student's enrollment in the class must be initiated through SDSU by the student. (Registrations won't occur for this course until October 2004.) Instructors do not have the authority to drop students from the class. Failure to complete the course may result in a grade of "F" or equivalent on the student's academic record. Any student unable to continue the course should contact the instructor immediately to discuss the possibility of completing course requirements, or call the College of Extended Studies at (619) 594-5821 for details regarding withdrawal.
