Dr. Susan D. Nickerson, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Dr. Nickerson's research has included studying high school algebra learning, learning in a middle school pre-algebra classroom, and for the past three years she has led the research and evaluation of the mathematics specialist initiative in the low-performing elementary schools. This research has involved a quantitative evaluation of student achievement and teacher learning and has involved qualitative research on changing classroom practice and teachers' professional communities.
Dr. Nickerson began her mathematics career as a high school mathematics teacher in Boston, MA. In addition to her research, she teaches mathematics and graduate courses to pre-service and practicing teachers at SDSU. She received her Master's Degree in Mathematics from UCSD, and her doctorate in Mathematics and Science Education from the UCSD / SDSU Joint Doctoral Program. Susan continues to publish and present internationally. She enjoys gardening, quilting and hiking with her family.
