Dr. Judith T. Sowder, Professor Emerita, Dept of Mathematics and Statistics
Judy was one of the founders of the Professional Development Collaborative. She worked with others to design the Mathematical Specialist Certificate Program, and the courses that were part of this program. She now plays a consultant role in the work of PDC.
Judy taught mathematics in Grades 5-12 and university mathematics, both undergraduate and graduate, before deciding to become a mathematics educator. Since that time she has taught many mathematics courses, including courses for prospective teachers and practicing teachers, and courses for graduate students in mathematics education.
Judy has played a role in research in mathematics for the past quarter-century. She has been funded primarily by the National Science Foundation, and the two major strands of her work have been the development of number sense, and the professional development of teachers. She served for four years as the editor of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education , and she has also served on the editorial board of Teaching Children Mathematics. In 2000 she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Judy's travel to many meetings is coming to an end, so she has acquired two dogs to keep her busy at home. She and Larry are planning some vacation trips to begin when he retires in May of 2004.
